Ф. Клементс (1928) различал 6 С.с.: денудация; пионерность (иммиграция); колонизация (ойкоз); межвидовая конкуренция; биоценотическая реакция; стабилизация (климакс). Развитие биоценоза от пионерности до стабилизации составляет серию.
